I did make it safely to my folks’ place in Connecticut this morning, and thanks for your safe travel wishes. I couldn’t very well walk in the door and say, “Hi, I’ll be back in a couple of hours!” So, I don’t have a lot of pictures for you yet, but this one beauty parked itself where I couldn’t miss it: right on the gutter outside my folks’ door. It’s a red-tailed hawk, and the pale yellow eyes suggest that it’s youngster.
I haven’t seen any butterflies out here yet, but here’s another silver-spotted skipper from the weeds at the south end yesterday.
That’s all I’ve got for now, but I’ve had good luck out here before, so let’s see what I can find tomorrow.

A lovely photo of the red-tailed hawk. From my experience, they don’t usually sit still too long.

Rebecca,
That is my experience, too. The one I included in Monday’s post sure behaved that way, but Tuesday’s hawk did not react as I moved to get the sun at my back and the blue sky behind it. I kept my distance, paused along the way to take safety shots, and did my best to avoid looking at it except through my camera, but perhaps none of that mattered. Instead, I read that young hawks just take some time to get the hang of things.
