A great show, despite the cold…

It was a bit chilly this morning in Estabrook Park, and the flooded area where we’ve been seeing the coot was all frozen over, but the wind was light, and the sky was crystal clear, so it was a good morning for checking on the critters. My first treat was finding this muskrat, whom IContinue reading “A great show, despite the cold…”

Happy 5th Anniversary!

It was five years ago today, on March 26, that I breathlessly emailed family and friends that I had spotted a wood duck on the pond in Estabrook Park. Before that day, I don’t believe I had ever seen one, let alone known their name. Here’s a look at that original picture. For those ofContinue reading “Happy 5th Anniversary!”

A few pictures before the snow flies…

The temps in Estabrook Park this morning were mild, at just around freezing, the winds were light, but the clouds had thickened up again. Two out of three ain’t bad, right? Plus, the snow that is sifting down now, as I write this, hadn’t started yet. The biggest surprise of the day came early, onContinue reading “A few pictures before the snow flies…”

Plenty of burnt orange to go around…

It was a beautiful February morning in Estabrook Park, with temps in the mid-teens, a very light breeze out of the west, and a crystal blue sky overhead. Even better, four hardy souls came out to join me on our Weekly Wildlife Walk. Despite all the fancy sparrows by the pond, the winter wren, andContinue reading “Plenty of burnt orange to go around…”

A close encounter of the hawk kind…

The snow did come last night, but not a lot, and the interesting wrinkle, which I only discovered once I was in the park, is that there must have been some freezing rain for a bit, before it changed over to snow, because the trails were as slippery as I’ve ever experienced them. I evenContinue reading “A close encounter of the hawk kind…”

February eases off the brakes…

The weather this morning in Estabrook Park was a lot nicer than forecast. Sure, temps were back in the teens, but the wind was light, at least down along the river, and there was hardly a cloud in the sky, so the warm sun really took the edge off the cold. The critters still seemContinue reading “February eases off the brakes…”

The wind takes a short break…

The wind is back to howling again this afternoon, but there was a little while this morning when it was on break. Plus, temps were in the upper twenties, and the sky was mostly clear, so it was a another pretty nice January morning in Estabrook Park. I was finally able to catch one ofContinue reading “The wind takes a short break…”

A fine Sunday morning in Estabrook…

We had another nearly-perfect January morning in Estabrook Park today, with temps in the teens, a very light breeze, and mostly clear blue skies. The treats started early for me when I spotted this mature Cooper’s hawk even before I crossed the Oak Leaf Trail on my way into the park. I would see itContinue reading “A fine Sunday morning in Estabrook…”

Toughing it out, each in their own way..

The recent freeze in Estabrook Park deepened this morning with temps in the single-digits, and windchills well below 0°F. The skies were clearer than yesterday, on the other hand, and I still don’t see a single cloud this afternoon, so conditions were good for some nice pictures today. Happily, some critters were willing to oblige.Continue reading “Toughing it out, each in their own way..”

Boxed in by thick fog…

Holy moly, was the fog thick this morning in Estabrook Park. I could barely see across the river at times. The breeze and road traffic were both light, on the other hand, so I could still hear the birds pretty well. Oddly, the critters I did manage to photograph today kept still and didn’t makeContinue reading “Boxed in by thick fog…”
