It was a beautiful morning in Estabrook Park, with temps in the mid-sixties, a light breeze, and clear skies, and the Badgerland Striders could not have chosen a better time for their half marathon. With sunrise at 6:06 am and a start time of 7:00 am, perhaps you can imagine how the park was alreadyContinue reading “Thank goodness for old friends…”

One more new arrival and some old favorites…
As I sit at my dining room table to write this now, we’re getting a nice rain, which we sorely need, but right after sunrise it was a nice morning to look for wildlife in Estabrook Park. The main treat of the day came early as I made my way upstream beside the river. That’sContinue reading “One more new arrival and some old favorites…”
A pause in the action…
After all the excitement yesterday of the teal, the warbler, the moth, and the grandson’s night heron, today felt like a return to the slower pace of the dog days of summer. The weather was certainly nice enough in Estabrook Park, and I even wore a light jacket until temps rose back into the 60s,Continue reading “A pause in the action…”
The new arrivals pick up the pace…
The change in the weather that I’ve been waiting for finally arrived overnight, after a line of thunderstorms rolled through, and it was cool, dry, still, and mostly sunny in Estabrook Park this morning. Sweet. I spotted our first treat of the day amongst the mallards on the water between the islands in the river.Continue reading “The new arrivals pick up the pace…”
Good news and bad news in Estabrook Park…
It was a peaceful morning in Estabrook Park. The temperature, humidity, wind, and even cloud cover could all be described as mild. The usual four or five great blue herons were on the river, and they’re a little tricky to count when they are so spread out and moving around, but at least this oneContinue reading “Good news and bad news in Estabrook Park…”
A slow mid-August Monday…
There has indeed been a break in the weather, and I saw real blue sky this morning for the first time in a week or so. Yay! As I was waiting for the 7am wildlife walkers to arrive, there was one crow on the parking lot and one on a pole beside it. Then twoContinue reading “A slow mid-August Monday…”
It’s not all bad…
The guy who runs his German shepherd loose over the southern soccer fields at dawn was back today, after a couple day absence, so there was no sign of the twin fawns and their mom. Instead, here’s a video I took with my phone yesterday after I thought I had gotten the best picture ofContinue reading “It’s not all bad…”
Twins!
There’s been no change in the weather, so I won’t belabor that point. Instead, the big new news is that we have two more fawns in Estabrook Park. Woo hoo! These were at the far south end this morning, and there were two together with their mom, so I’m sure they are twins and neitherContinue reading “Twins!”
A new arrival to welcome, despite the gloomy weather…
Just when I thought the weather in Estabrook Park couldn’t possibly get any darker and damper, today came along to show me I ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Sheesh! At least it wasn’t pouring down rain, and the winds continue to be very light, so that’s somethin’. Anyway, most of the critters appeared to be sleepingContinue reading “A new arrival to welcome, despite the gloomy weather…”
Plenty of necks, long and short…
The clouds were thicker, lower, and wetter than yesterday in Estabrook Park this morning, but the wind was even lighter, so at least “the hearing” was good. Here’s what a great blue heron on the river looks like under these conditions. After putting in an appearance for me early yesterday, and then evading the wildlifeContinue reading “Plenty of necks, long and short…”
