March like this isn’t hard to take…

We had a gorgeous March morning for our weekly wildlife walk in Estabrook Park. The wind was blowing pretty good, but the temps were mild, and the sun was out, so it was very comfortable. After hitting the pond, which was pretty quiet, we headed down to the river, and the first great sight ofContinue reading “March like this isn’t hard to take…”

Blue skies return, at least for a day…

It was another wonderful morning in Estabrook Park but in a very different way than yesterday. Instead of fresh snow, we had blue skies and bright sunshine. The skies were so clear, in fact, that there was enough light for me to venture into the park before 6:30 am, for the first time this year.Continue reading “Blue skies return, at least for a day…”

March eases in like a little white lamb…

It was a wonderful morning in Estabrook Park. Everything had a fresh coating of light and fluffy snow, the air was cold and still enough to keep it that way, at least for a couple of hours, and the sun poked through the clouds every once in a while. What a way to start theContinue reading “March eases in like a little white lamb…”

Some early signs of the spring to come…

It was a gorgeous morning in Estabrook Park, with seasonably mild temps, mostly clear skies, and nearly still air. Not only could I hear a pin drop, but I could also finally identify the call I had just barely heard yesterday (the track from Ohio, May 12, 1980) over the roar of the wind inContinue reading “Some early signs of the spring to come…”

Some sights we don’t get to see often…

I had reason to run out to the Wehr Nature Center this morning, and the event was at 9am, so I figured I should get there before the sun rose. That way I could spend my daylight looking for wildlife there instead of while sitting in my car. Anyway, this is who I found. IContinue reading “Some sights we don’t get to see often…”

Finally, enough local content for a whole post…

As promised, it was a gorgeous morning in Estabrook Park, with seasonably mild temps, a very light breeze, and plenty of blue sky and sunshine. Happily, for me at least, it was well below freezing overnight so the unpaved path along the river was all frozen back up after thawing a bit yesterday afternoon. TheContinue reading “Finally, enough local content for a whole post…”

A cold and quiet start to the new year…

It was cold and cloudy this morning in Estabrook, but the wind was light, we already have a nice new coating of snow on the ground from the previous couple of days, and the snow that is coming down now hadn’t started yet. Plus, the park was nearly empty of people, and traffic noise wasContinue reading “A cold and quiet start to the new year…”

A big finish to a big year…

Well, shoot! Somehow, I forgot to finish my post yesterday and send it out to you. I even had some nice pictures for you, as you will soon see, but I must have gotten distracted. Sorry about that! Anyhoo, after the early snow yesterday morning, which was barely more than a dusting, the sun cameContinue reading “A big finish to a big year…”

Yet another bird joins the first timers club…

The sky is starting to haze up a bit now, but it was a beautiful morning in Estabrook Park, with mild temps again, still air, and clear skies for a while. The first pretty sight I found taking full advantage of the golden sunlight was this common merganser hen up on the ice above theContinue reading “Yet another bird joins the first timers club…”

Some dashes of brown to dilute all the gray…

Wow! It sure is a very gray day in Estabrook Park, but the good news, at least for folks who have been less than thrilled with the recent winter weather, is that the temps are mild, the breeze is very light, and there has been hardly any precipitation at all. Even better, three folks turnedContinue reading “Some dashes of brown to dilute all the gray…”
