It’s not August yet, but these sure feel like some lazy days of summer.

The recent great weather in Estabrook Park continued this morning, the cicadas were already singing at 7 a.m., and this green heron making one of its infrequent visits to the pond was icing on the cake. There was also this trio of wood duck hens there, and they’ve started that mutual preening behavior that we’veContinue reading “It’s not August yet, but these sure feel like some lazy days of summer.”

A new behavior, and maybe a new face…

It was a super nice morning in Estabrook Park, with mild temps, mostly clear skies, and nearly still air. Once the channel 12 news helicopter was done reporting on an early-morning traffic tie-up on I-43 north, things really quieted down, and I could even hear the blue-grey gnatcatchers calling softly. Before we get to theContinue reading “A new behavior, and maybe a new face…”

A skeleton crew…

The air was a bit more humid than yesterday, but it was an otherwise very nice morning in Estabrook Park. I saw far fewer critters than yesterday, however, and perhaps the missing ones have already hit the road for the holiday. They haven’t all gone, thankfully, so here are some of the ones I couldContinue reading “A skeleton crew…”

Deer and ducklings…

We had some rain overnight, and it sure was humid at sunrise, but the sky was mostly clear, and the air was almost still, so it was a fine morning to look for wildlife in Estabrook Park. Some of the wildlife didn’t even wait for me to get there, and I was greeted as soonContinue reading “Deer and ducklings…”

More unexpected faces…

It was a picture-perfect morning in Estabrook Park, with blue skies, a light breeze, and pleasant temps, at least for the early morning. Sure, the heat’s on its way back, after a couple days of relief, but another sign that peak summer is almost upon us, and one that I love to hear, is theContinue reading “More unexpected faces…”

It’s gonna be a hot one…

My thermometer was reading 80°F at 7 a.m., and the heat index is expected to exceed 100°F later today, so I did my best to get a nice early start in Estabrook Park this morning. Another upside to chasing the sunrise is that I got to visit our young guest, the immature yellow-crowned night heron,Continue reading “It’s gonna be a hot one…”

Some good catches…

The clouds were thick, so it never got very light in Estabrook Park this morning, but the winds were light, the rain held off, and the air wasn’t too cool, so it was a pretty good time for a visit. My first treat came at the pond, when I spotted this action at the northContinue reading “Some good catches…”

More birds than parks, but just barely…

It was a pretty nice morning in Estabrook Park, especially compared to earlier in the week, but it felt as though we might be past the peak of migration. There were still warblers about, but it seemed as though they had thinned out a bit. Anyway, I got to the pond nice and early, andContinue reading “More birds than parks, but just barely…”

A dark and stormy morning…

The forecast suggested that I had about a two-hour window between sunrise and thunderstorms, so I snuck into Estabrook to see who I could see, but I didn’t even need light for the first observation. There had been a big influx of white-throated sparrows since yesterday morning, and they were singing their songs throughout theContinue reading “A dark and stormy morning…”

They just keep on arriving…

Despite the wind and partly cloudy skies, the mild temps made it a very pleasant morning for a stroll through Estabrook Park. Ten folks came out to join me for our weekly wildlife walk, and I recorded us seeing 40 bird species, including a few first-of-the-year tree swallows mixed in with a few bank swallowsContinue reading “They just keep on arriving…”
