Some birds bold up for a change…

It was a bit cloudy this morning, but otherwise quite nice in Estabrook Park, and now that the clouds have moved on, the day looks so pretty that I feel like I should try to do something outside this afternoon. I stopped by the pond nice and early, but like a cat that can’t decideContinue reading “Some birds bold up for a change…”

Lake Michigan delivers again…

In celebration of Mother’s Day, I’m sure, and World Migratory Bird Day, which was actually yesterday, the Milwaukee Birders planned a little show-and-tell event at Lakeshore State Park this morning, and I was ready for a change of pace, so I rode my bike down at sunrise to wait for them to arrive. Just kidding.Continue reading “Lake Michigan delivers again…”

More new faces, and a shorebird trifecta, hurray!

It was much warmer in Estabrook Park this morning, and there was no hint of frost. Plus, the skies were still clear, so I was able to start nice and early, before the wind came up. My first surprise came at the pond, where I spotted our first eastern kingbird of the year. Below theContinue reading “More new faces, and a shorebird trifecta, hurray!”

Some highs and lows…

It has gotten cool and breezy now, but earlier today the weather was as nice in Estabrook as yesterday, so I was crossing the Oak Leaf Trail into the park just after 5:30 a.m. There’s a guy who likes to let his German shepherd run loose on the soccer fields, and some days I getContinue reading “Some highs and lows…”

I finally make it back into Estabrook…

Despite being back in Milwaukee yesterday, I had one more stop to make before going back to Estabrook Park this morning. The Milwaukee Birders were visiting the Shorewood Nature Preserve yesterday morning, and I couldn’t really let them bird my back yard without saying “hi”, now could I? Plus, it gave me a chance toContinue reading “I finally make it back into Estabrook…”

No pranks today…

My first big treat of the day was finally capturing this darling pied-billed grebe on film, after only catching glimpses of it for the last couple of days. It has been fishing around the upstream island, and once it has spotted me, it has usually disappeared after just its second dive. Happily, it relented todayContinue reading “No pranks today…”

March settles back down…

After the crazy weather lately, it was nice to have some normal March conditions for a change. Temps were seasonably cool, and it was partly cloudy, but the winds were light, and it definitely was not precipitating. The critters seemed to be enjoying the return to normalcy as much as I was, and here’s theContinue reading “March settles back down…”

Spring makes a quick comeback…

Sure, at 22°F, it was a bit chilly this morning for the middle of March, but the sun was mostly out, and the breeze was very light, so it was quite a nice morning for our Weekly Wildlife Walk in Estabrook Park. There were eleven of us all together, and we identified 25 bird species.Continue reading “Spring makes a quick comeback…”

The surprise guests become even more surprising…

The weather this morning was just as nice as forecast, so I entered Estabrook Park with high hopes just a few minutes before sunrise, and the critters did not disappoint. The first treat of the day, and probably the biggest by any measure of the (insert time period here), was encountering this family of AmericanContinue reading “The surprise guests become even more surprising…”

Everything hasn’t blown away, yet.

I’m back from the dentist, and man-o-man, has it gotten windy while I was away. I didn’t expect to see much this morning, but at least it wasn’t raining, and I needed the exercise anyway, so I took a walk in Estabrook Park to see who I could see. My first pleasant surprise came asContinue reading “Everything hasn’t blown away, yet.”
