It was a very soggy morning in Estabrook Park, but temps were in the 40s, the winds were light, and critters are on the move, so I eventually dragged myself out to take a look. The ice on the pond is starting to melt, and here’s the first critter I found taking advantage of theContinue reading “Sewing silk purses…”

A grey day in March…
I believe it may have been the warmest morning of the year so far in Estabrook Park, with temps starting in the high 30s, and soon warming into the 40s. The cloud cover was thick, however, and so was the mud on the path beside the river, so I struggled a bit to get manyContinue reading “A grey day in March…”
The new arrivals pick up their pace…
It did warm up into the low 30s by sunrise, but it also clouded up, as forecast, so the river trail mud was nice and firm for our weekly wildlife walk this morning. There were eight of us, all together, and we managed to spot 25 bird species. The first treat of the morning wasContinue reading “The new arrivals pick up their pace…”
Ducks galore!
The weather this morning was as nice as forecast, and I took the low-wind opportunity to join the Milwaukee Birders as they look for ducks on the waterfront in the Port Washington Coal Dock Park. They kicked off the event with a visit to the peregrine falcon nesting box atop the Port Washington power plant,Continue reading “Ducks galore!”
February gets blown away…
Well, I finally did return to Estabrook Park this morning, and winter sure is on a break, if it’s not gone for good. There’s still plenty of ice slowly melting in the river and a couple of small patches of snow in the woods where it must have drifted a bit deeper than elsewhere, butContinue reading “February gets blown away…”
Thank heaven for little birds…
After the wind howled all night long, it had backed off to just 18 mph at sunrise this morning. Add that to an air temperature of a chilly 14°F, and the windchill dipped into negative territory for the first time this year in Estabrook Park. I don’t know if that was the cause, or itContinue reading “Thank heaven for little birds…”
The deep freeze continues to deliver…
It was a wonderfully curious or curiously wonderful morning in Estabrook Park, but I’m still not sure which. The forecast temperature was 29°F, but a strong breeze brought the windchill down into the teens, and it felt even colder than that. I should have worn another layer. Also, as you can see below, the skyContinue reading “The deep freeze continues to deliver…”
December just keeps getting better!
The recent deep freeze in Estabrook Park continues to back off gradually, and the temps this morning were in the high 20s, the breezes were light, and so the wind chill was up into the high teens. Plus, the thick cloud cover that hid the sunrise soon dispersed, and it turned into a nice sunnyContinue reading “December just keeps getting better!”
December doubles down!
The weather was just about as forecast in Estabrook Park this morning, with thick cloud cover, temps in the low 20s, light breezes, and windchills back up into the low teens. Four intrepid nature enthusiast came out to join me for our weekly wildlife walk, and this is who we saw. Everyone wanted to seeContinue reading “December doubles down!”
December gets off to a great start!
The recent weather I’ve been enjoying in Estabrook Park just keeps getting better! The wind speed this morning had slowed to just barely into double digits, but temps were low enough to bring the wind chill down to 0°F at sunrise, and the skies were crystal clear. Outstanding! We still have belted kingfishers, if youContinue reading “December gets off to a great start!”
