I get to go to the Urban Ecology Center in Riverside Park today to learn about Prescribed Burn Ecology in Urban Parks, and I somehow picked the first sunny morning of the month to do it. Yay! Since the class starts at 8am and runs all day, I wouldn’t be able to show you any pictures I took today even if I did go to Estabrook to take some, so let’s take a look instead at some of the fun migrants we’re still hoping to see in the park in the coming months.
Here’s a pair of ring-necked ducks between the islands from just last March.
Here’s a bufflehead drake we saw at the end of last January on a sliver of open water in the river.
Here’s a common goldeneye drake from just the day before, also on the river.
And here’s a handsome common merganser drake, from just a couple days before that.
Finally, what’s the point of all that river ice if we don’t get to see a beaver up on it?
Doesn’t this all just make you yearn for a polar vortex to hurry up and get here? It sure does for me!
