Signs of a break in the weather…

Sure, it was foggy, cloudy, and even a little breezy in Estabrook Park this morning, but there was a short gap in the clouds at one point, and at least I didn’t get chased home by rain for a change. All the regulars were at the pond when I arrived, and here are a pairContinue reading “Signs of a break in the weather…”

One more new arrival and some old favorites…

As I sit at my dining room table to write this now, we’re getting a nice rain, which we sorely need, but right after sunrise it was a nice morning to look for wildlife in Estabrook Park. The main treat of the day came early as I made my way upstream beside the river. That’sContinue reading “One more new arrival and some old favorites…”

More pretty sights at Kohler-Andrae…

It was another beautiful day at Kohler Andrae State Park, and Anne chose this morning for our new family tradition of riding our bikes down the Ozaukee County Interurban Trail to get breakfast in Port Washington. The breeze was super light for our ride down, and then it picked up out of the south toContinue reading “More pretty sights at Kohler-Andrae…”

A few more stragglers…

It has mostly clouded up now, as I write this, but the nice weather we’ve been enjoying in Estabrook Park was still pretty much holding this morning for our Weekly Wildlife Walk. Three folks met me for the 7am start, and another four joined us at 8am. Our first treat came early when we spottedContinue reading “A few more stragglers…”

A ruckus over the far shore…

The weather in Estabrook Park this morning, if anything, was even nicer than forecast. The air seemed nearly still for a while, so I was even able to hear a warbling vireo calling from across the river. The first interesting scene came at the river and across from the two radio towers. There is aContinue reading “A ruckus over the far shore…”

The warblers return!

The dreams I had yesterday about what today would be like came true, and despite the cold, with temps in the mid-40s, it was a spectacular morning in Estabrook Park. Even better, the migrating warblers are here and ravenously foraging for insects through the trees. I didn’t really start to see them until I reachedContinue reading “The warblers return!”

Some hits and a near miss…

It was cool this morning in Estabrook Park, but otherwise about as nice a day as you could hope for to start the holiday weekend, with clear skies and a very light breeze. I found my first surprise at the pond, where this ruby-throated hummingbird was perched beside the paved path about waist high. IContinue reading “Some hits and a near miss…”

The fog thickens…

Man, if I thought yesterday was foggy, I hadn’t seen nothin’ yet. Here’s a picture of a least sandpiper, who was kind enough to visit again, that I think best captures the mood in Estabrook Park this morning. Fortunately, the fog eventually dispersed a bit, so I was able to get a picture of ourContinue reading “The fog thickens…”
