Finally, enough local content for a whole post…

As promised, it was a gorgeous morning in Estabrook Park, with seasonably mild temps, a very light breeze, and plenty of blue sky and sunshine. Happily, for me at least, it was well below freezing overnight so the unpaved path along the river was all frozen back up after thawing a bit yesterday afternoon. TheContinue reading “Finally, enough local content for a whole post…”

“Blinding, Fierce, and Shockingly Electric”

This morning in Estabrook Park, the air was a little colder, the wind was a little lighter, and the clouds where a whole lot thicker than yesterday. Ah well, Meat Loaf is proven right yet again. The wildlife was pretty much the same, except that I didn’t see any deer, and this magnificent creature, aContinue reading ““Blinding, Fierce, and Shockingly Electric””

Back to Estabrook again…

It was great to be back in Estabrook Park this morning, as always, and the gorgeous weather was just icing on my cake. The sky was clear, the winds were pretty light, and temps were in the mid-twenties: about as perfect as mid-February can get. It looks as though it was cold while we wereContinue reading “Back to Estabrook again…”

Another mystery potentially solved…

The forecast lake effect snow held off till after 9am today, and the weather was otherwise relatively mild, compared to what we’ve been enjoying lately, so it was a pleasant morning in Estabrook Park. The critters, on the other hand, seemed to act as though heavy snow was imminent, and I only had one decentContinue reading “Another mystery potentially solved…”

Buena Vista Prairie Chicken Meadow

First, thanks to all of you who came out to the Friends of Estabrook Annual Meeting last evening. We had a great turnout for such a cold day, and I’m sorry that I didn’t get to show as many pictures as I had expected, but Harold had a lot of ground to cover. Now, onContinue reading “Buena Vista Prairie Chicken Meadow”

Don’t forget to insert title here…

Our current deep freeze remains quite persistent, and the weather this morning in Estabrook Park was nearly the same as yesterday. Things were pretty quiet along the river, and on my way upstream I saw a couple of goldeneyes, a few common mergansers, and a few mallards, but no pictures I felt compelled to take.Continue reading “Don’t forget to insert title here…”

It was a beautiful, if chilly, sunny morning in Estabrook Park, and the early light let me get to work nice and early today. What a great way to start the week. On my way upstream to meet the weekly wildlife walkers, I heard first, and then soon spotted, the one mammal I saw allContinue reading

It’s amazing what a little warmup can do…

Before I get into today’s post let me tell you about the Friends of Estabrook Park Annual Meeting, which is open to everyone, member or not, on this Wednesday, January 28 at 7pm in the Blatz Pavilion at Lincoln Park. I’m on the schedule to show some wildlife pictures, so if you’ve always wanted toContinue reading “It’s amazing what a little warmup can do…”

A rivalry on pause, likely due to cold…

It did snow again overnight, it did warm up into the twenties, and the wind did stay light, which was all very nice, but I sure could have used a little sun to coax the birds out to bask in its warmth. On the other hand, I did get to see my first blue jayContinue reading “A rivalry on pause, likely due to cold…”

About as nice as a day this cold can be…

This morning in Estabrook was just as cold as yesterday, but the breeze was much lighter, and the sky was just as blue, so it was a very nice morning for a walk in the park. The common merganser hens are still with us, and either they are getting used to people walking up andContinue reading “About as nice as a day this cold can be…”
