A fine “welcome back” to the Nutmeg State…

Anne and I arrived safely in Connecticut last evening, but I didn’t have a chance to go out looking for wildlife until after lunch today. I didn’t expect to see much that late in the day, so I was quite pleasantly surprised when the critters put on a nice mid-day show. Here’s a trio ofContinue reading “A fine “welcome back” to the Nutmeg State…”

The internet is back, and so is the sun…

It was a little warmer and a little breezier this morning than yesterday in Estabrook, so there was no frost on the grass this time. The sky was just as clear, though, so it made for some pretty pictures, and the issue that kept websites from working yesterday appears to have been resolved, so IContinue reading “The internet is back, and so is the sun…”

Are they green, or are they blue?

As I suggested yesterday, I did ride down to Lakeshore State Park this morning to join the Milwaukee Birders again. There was a stiff breeze coming off the lake, so thank goodness temps were milder than they’ve been recently. When I spotted this little cutie, I got all excited because the white-ish bib and collarContinue reading “Are they green, or are they blue?”

A ruckus over the far shore…

The weather in Estabrook Park this morning, if anything, was even nicer than forecast. The air seemed nearly still for a while, so I was even able to hear a warbling vireo calling from across the river. The first interesting scene came at the river and across from the two radio towers. There is aContinue reading “A ruckus over the far shore…”

Deer and ducklings…

We had some rain overnight, and it sure was humid at sunrise, but the sky was mostly clear, and the air was almost still, so it was a fine morning to look for wildlife in Estabrook Park. Some of the wildlife didn’t even wait for me to get there, and I was greeted as soonContinue reading “Deer and ducklings…”

The wind takes a breather…

The skies stayed clear, and the air stayed cold, but the wind almost stopped, so it was a very nice morning in Estabrook Park, despite the hoar frost on the grass in places. My first big surprise came at the far northwest end, where I had gone to check on the pigeon chicks and seeContinue reading “The wind takes a breather…”

Even more color on an even grayer day

The clouds were so thick at sunrise this morning, that I could feel a slight mist leaking out of them, and I even put the rain cover over my camera as I entered Estabrook Park. I did not have great expectations for this outing, but I am happy to report that I had set myContinue reading “Even more color on an even grayer day”

March settles back down…

After the crazy weather lately, it was nice to have some normal March conditions for a change. Temps were seasonably cool, and it was partly cloudy, but the winds were light, and it definitely was not precipitating. The critters seemed to be enjoying the return to normalcy as much as I was, and here’s theContinue reading “March settles back down…”

A couple of mid-November surprises.

It was cloudier and cooler this morning in Estabrook Park, but the breeze was lighter than yesterday, and the clouds held their water, so it was a pretty nice day for checking on the critters. We still have three stubborn wood ducks on the pond who have not yet flown south. There are two hensContinue reading “A couple of mid-November surprises.”

October keeps up the pace…

The beautiful weather continues, and it was another wonderful morning in Estabrook Park. My first greeter today was this beaver on its way home after a night upriver chewing on bark. From the river, I headed to the pond and was thrilled to get one more chance to photograph a red-breasted nuthatch. They are stunners,Continue reading “October keeps up the pace…”
