Ahhhh. That’s what I like to see…

The breeze was lighter and the clouds thinner in Estabrook Park this morning than the forecast had led me to fear, so nice images were a lot easier to find than yesterday. Warblers get most of the press, for a variety of reasons, but they are far from the only pretty birds in the migrationContinue reading “Ahhhh. That’s what I like to see…”

What a difference a couple weeks can make…

The influx of migrating warblers, which was merely a trickle in Estabrook Park by the end of April, is now a flood. The bushes and trees were just crawling with them in spots, and I counted 18 species. I sure hope I get a nice sunny day to take pictures of them before they moveContinue reading “What a difference a couple weeks can make…”

But wait, there’s more…

When I wrote you last evening, I figured I’d get one more chance to stroll around the grounds of the Trans Kalahari Inn, before we headed off for the airport, but I also figured I’d seen most of what there was to see. It would appear that I was mistaken on the latter. Almost asContinue reading “But wait, there’s more…”

A fine Namibian sendoff…

We drove back to the Trans Kalahari Inn today from Omaruru, but before we got on the road this morning, Deb and I spent a couple of hours walking the dry Omaruru River bed, and we didn’t see much. Compared to the rest of this trip, it was a bit surprising, but I guess everyContinue reading “A fine Namibian sendoff…”

Namibia is for the birds, but in a good way…

We drove from Swakopmund to Omaruru today, in the Erongo Region of central Namibia. It was real foggy in the morning when we left, so we didn’t get a chance to take one more look for wildlife at the Swakop River. The good news, however, is just as we were heading home last evening thisContinue reading “Namibia is for the birds, but in a good way…”

A Namibian sampler…

It was another stellar day here in Namibia, and my sister joined me this morning on my search for wildlife near the mouth of the Swakop River, as Anne enjoyed herself a little down time. This first bird looks sort of like the young great blue herons we often see in Estabrook Park and theContinue reading “A Namibian sampler…”

More Etosha and some Walvis Bay…

It was another fine day in Namibia, and the only driving on the schedule today was just 30 minutes on a paved road down the coast from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay to see its famous lagoon and surrounding wetlands, which “are one of the most important coastal wetlands of southern Africa.” Before we get toContinue reading “More Etosha and some Walvis Bay…”

Greetings from Namibia!

We flew from Johannesburg, South Africa to Windhoek, Namibia today, and when we got to our lodging at the Trans Kalahari Inn, there was still plenty of daylight, so we strolled around the grounds to see who else might be here. Things were quiet at first, but eventually this character popped up to sing usContinue reading “Greetings from Namibia!”

Greetings from South Africa!

After 27 hours of travel, including stops at JFK and Nairobi, we finally arrived at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa this afternoon. Woo hoo! Even better, the area between the terminal and the shuttlebus zone was quite nicely landscaped with trees, plants, and a bit of lawn, so there was plenty toContinue reading “Greetings from South Africa!”

A soggy April makes a valiant effort to redeem itself…

It was a perfect morning in Estabrook Park. Sure, it was a little cool, a few degrees below the average low for this date, but the sky was crystal clear, and the air was nearly calm, so the sun warmed things up pretty quickly, and it was just a fabulous time to go looking forContinue reading “A soggy April makes a valiant effort to redeem itself…”
